As states begin to add a financial literacy requirement for high school graduation, the question arises: how do we provide this information for diploma-track students with special needs? For, while these skills are even more important for students who may live on a very tight budget, the language and concepts required by state standards may be difficult for these students to comprehend. Transition 2 Life’s Financial Literacy for SPED Students is a valuable resource to provide comprehensive financial education to these students.

Written for Comprehension

Written on an elementary reading level, this one-semester workbook provides scaffolded lessons on the vital concepts of money growth and management. From simple concepts like hourly and salaried wages to simple versus compound interest, buying cars, renting apartments, investing in stocks and bonds, or credit card debt, this book covers a wide range of topics and skills needed for independent adult living.

Along the way, students create budgets, explore interest rates at local financial institutions, compare credit card interest rates, and examine how much car they can buy with their probable income.

Meeting Standards

While written specifically for Oregon’s State Financial Standards, this book covers most standards for most states currently imposing a financial literacy requirement. Future editions of this book will focus on standards in several other states. (We’ll announce when they are ready.) However, you can check out the content of the current edition with this free sample.
