Budgeting is an essential skill needed for independent living. By starting with small steps, we can help our students with special needs learn this vital skill and enhance their ability to manage money responsibly and make wise choices for their lives. Buying Lunch is a lesson from Transition in Ten which allows students to practice budgeting a fixed amount of money to buy a variety of lunches. This quick lesson makes good bell-work, or easy practice during rotations or station-time.

How to Begin

The lesson is provided below

  1. Print the four student lesson pages in color and glue to a file folder. Laminate if desired.

  2. Print the worksheets in black and white and provide one for each student.

  3. Staple the sign-in sheet at the back of the file folder so students can document that they’ve completed the lesson and addressed the standard.

For More Information

While the lessons in this blog can stand alone, they work best when paired with the Financial Literacy course from Susan Traugh’s Transition 2 Life curriculum. This one-semester course is offered in both a special education edition and a companion text for general education students. Find it here!
