Getting Best Car Insurance Rate

Aug 28
1 min read

With a driver’s license comes the responsibility of obtaining auto insurance. Teens can benefit from learning how to get the best insurance rates even before they get that first driver’s license. This lesson gives teens 5 steps to take to get the best insurance rates possible.

How to Teach the Lesson

  1. Discuss insurance. Explain how auto insurance is rated by risk. The more risk an insurance company thinks it has, the higher the cost or rate. The less risk they think they have, the lower the insurance cost. Tickets and accidents raise the rate. Luxury cars cost more to insure than economy cars because they cost more to fix. Experienced drivers cost less than new drivers who might make more mistakes. Using these facts, what could students do to lower their rate now?

  2. Read Pg. 166. In addition to the factors above, there are other ways that students can lower the cost of their auto insurance. Talk about each step and whether it would be a good fit for students now.

  3. Make a plan. Then use Pg. 167 to create a plan to get the lowest rates possible. Can students get better grades? Does your school offer driver’s ed?

And, while the lessons in this blog can stand alone, they work best when paired with the Financial Literacy course from Susan Traugh’s Transition 2 Life curriculum. This one-semester course is offered in both a special education edition and a companion text for general education students. Find it here!
